The ACCC Inquiry into the competitiveness of wholesale gas prices in eastern and southern Australia released its report on 22 April 2016.

The report makes a number of recommendations that the COAG Energy Council and state and territory governments can consider to alleviate gas market issues, particularly for industrial customers. These include:

  • enabling new gas supply to come to market, in particular in south eastern Australia
  • revisiting the regulatory coverage of pipelines, increasing the ability for pipelines with market power to be covered
  • the consistency and transparency of the provision of information to the market.

The ACCC will also further consider some practices in the market, including the practice of joint marketing of the Gippsland Basin Joint Venture.
