Purpose of the code

The Oil Code of Conduct is a mandatory code covering the sale, supply or purchase of declared petroleum products, such as unleaded petrol and diesel.

The oil code regulates the conduct of fuel suppliers, distributors and retailers. It also provides certain rights and responsibilities for industry participants.

Under the code wholesalers of declared petroleum products must publish a daily terminal gate price.

The ACCC is responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of the oil code.

If a party signs a franchise agreement and resells fuel under that agreement, they are covered by the oil code, not the franchising code.

Types of petroleum products covered by the code

The oil code covers petroleum products that are declared.

Declared petroleum products are:

  • unleaded petrol
  • a blend of unleaded petrol and ethanol
  • a blend of unleaded petrol and one or more biofuels, other than ethanol
  • premium unleaded petrol, other than premium unleaded petrol proprietary product
  • diesel fuel other than a diesel proprietary product.
