The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will not intervene in the proposed acquisition by Austral Brick Company Pty Limited of Pioneer International Limited's Queensland clay brick manufacturing operation.

"Following market inquiries in Queensland and NSW, the ACCC concluded that the proposed acquisition is unlikely to substantially lessen competition in the Queensland and NSW clay brick markets," Acting ACCC Chairman, Mr Allan Asher, said today.

"Austral will continue to compete with CSR and Boral in both Queensland and NSW.

"The ACCC will be concerned to ensure that rationalisation in the building products industry is achieved without causing higher prices to consumers, including many business consumers who rely on competitive prices from building product manufacturers in order to compete effectively in their own markets".
