On 31 January 2014, Australia Post provided the ACCC with a price notification proposing an increase in the basic postage rate from 60 cents to 70 cents from 31 March 2014. Australia Post also proposed increases in the prices of other large ordinary letter services.

Australia Post also advised of price changes it was proposing to some other monopoly reserved letter services, including PreSort letters. These letter services are used generally by business, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations, and are not subject to ACCC prices surveillance.

The ACCC was required under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 to assess Australia Post’s pricing proposal.

The ACCC sought submissions from interested parties on Australia Post’s proposal. The closing date for submissions was Monday 10 February 2014.

The ACCC released its decision to not object to Australia Post’s pricing proposal on Thursday 20 February 2014.
